Topic: 'Planning is Common Sense ' Speaker: Mick Burgess - Urban Contractors Mick Burgess is a knockabout bloke who owns an award-winning Canberra based business with his wife Anita. This year they celebrated their 21st birthday in business. Also, Urban Contractors took out the First Generation Business award at the recent Family Business Association awards. Asked. how to describe his business, Mr Burgess said: "We fix problems." "Once, all I was doing was putting out bushfires, but then my business coach taught me about strategic planning,- he said. "It was my biggest change — I used to do everything until I found that others who specialized in one thing could do it better than me." Yes, a big difference has been the planning. "We have a new business plan in place," Mr Burgess said. -When we first started, it was a week-to-week proposition and now I have a 200-year plan. If I 'cark' it, this business will continue on." "When I first started, I concentrated on the construction side of the business, buying new Bobcats and new trucks. I forgot about the administrative side," he said. "But that's one of the key issues you have to focus on — the numbers and the money have to be right." "The future is not just out there for Mr Burgess, it has to be managed." Located near the Canberra Airport, this commercial, civil and domestic landscaping business has not only successfully met the challenges operating in a highly competitive market, but though innovation has turned business relationships and opportunities into a thriving business. Those who know Mick, know he is fun and interesting speaker who is always happy to pass on some of his enthusiasm for business.
